What is Homoeopathy?
Homoeopathy is a well-established system of medical treatment that assists and
reinforces the body’s own natural healing system. Homoeopathy does not just
treat the illness; it is not the illness that presents itself to the homoeopath,
homoeopathy has remedies to treat people with illnesses. All symptoms of ill
health are expressions of disharmony within the whole person, a fact recognised
within homoeopathy, and that it is the individual who requires treatment not the
disease. The remedies used have no known side effects and are not addictive.
Based on the natural Law of Similars, homoeopathy is the medical practice of
treating like with like. Simply put, it not only takes into consideration the
symptoms you are suffering from, and deals with them, but also deals with the
other aspects of you – Body/Mind/Spirit (the physical, emotional and mental),
providing a holistic overview and treatment. Homoeopathy is tailored to the
individual and is therefore as individual as each patient. By taking a thorough
case history the homoeopath is able to make an in-depth analysis, and based upon
this an appropriate remedial regime is undertaken. It is the person being
treated, so somebody suffering from the same symptoms may not necessarily be
treated with the same remedy.
Homoeopathy has been around for approximately two hundred years. However, it
should be noted that the principles upon which it works were first suggested by
Hippocrates in the fifth century BC. Despite progress in alopathic medicine
Homoeopathy has continued to thrive, due to the fact that it is seen to work.
Samuel Hahnemann, of the late 18th Century, is the man who revived and promoted
this form of teatment. He believed that human beings have the capacity to heal
themselves and set out to prove this. His work continues to be fundamental and
pertinent, and in its present form Homoeopathy has stood the test of time. We
owe him a great debt.
Homoeopathy works in a totally different way from conventional medicine. Whereas
normal medicines work against the disease and symptoms, homoeopathy works in a
"similar" way with the disease and symptoms. The remedies used to treat sick
patients are actually capable of producing similar symptoms and diseases in
healthy people. The word homoeopathy is derived from two Greek words – Hamios,
meaning like or similar and pathos, meaning suffering. It is a truly
complementary medicine.
The Homoeopath observes the symptoms of illness as a mirror, as the body’s way
of showing that there is something wrong inside, and also uses this as a useful
guide to the choice of remedy. When ill, a person’s body energies become upset,
often showing up as tiredness, Homoeopathy stimulates the body’s energies,
allowing them to normalise.
The remedies used are prepared by repeatedly diluting extracts from materials
that include: -
- Vegetable, mineral, animal or herbs.
- Botanical medicines including drugs such as morphine and arsenic.
- Sand, charcoal, or common salt.
- Graphite (pencil lead) may also be used in potentised form in a state
that is no longer toxic.
Additionally, the more dilute the remedy, the more powerful is its effects.
Remedies can also be made from antigens such as, house dust, cat hair etc. if
patients are allergic to these substances. The remedies are so greatly diluted,
and in doses so minute that they have no pharmacological action. Sometimes the
diluted remedy does not contain a single surviving molecule of the original
substance.
The healing response will depend on the prescribing of the right remedy in the
right potency (or strength), also on the body’s vitality. If the body’s reactive
powers have been suppressed through long exposure to steroid drugs, or if the
body’s vitality is very low, then homoeopathic remedies may be initially
ineffective.
Depending upon how much irreversible damage has, or has not, occurred, the
results of homoeopathic treatment range widely from minimal to spectacular.
There is no class of disease which homoeopathy cannot be used to treat.
With conditions such as allergies, eczema, arthritis, hay fever or some of the
most common problems, other medicines may suppress the condition for a time but
they are treating the symptom rather than the person. Homoeopathy, through
treating the person, can treat these conditions effectively.
