What is the Feldenkrais Method?
This method is named after its originator, Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, D.Sc.
(1904-1984), a Russian born physicist, mechanical engineer, judo expert and
educator.
The Feldenkrais Method is a form of somatic teaching that uses gentle movement
and directed focus to enhance human functioning and improve movement. Through
Feldenkrais, improvements can be made to flexibility and coordination,
increasing the ease and range of motion, and assisting the rediscovery of your
natural capacity for flowing, efficient movement. These improvements will often
enhance functioning in other aspects of your life.
The Feldenkrais Method is based on principles of physics, biomechanics and an
empirical understanding of learning and human development. By expanding the
self-image through movement sequences that bring attention to the parts of the
self that are out of awareness, the Feldenkrais Method enables you through this
increased awareness, to include more of yourself in your functioning movements.
Students become more aware of their habitual neuromuscular patterns and
rigidities, expanding their options for new ranges of movement. Thus assisting
the practitioner to live life more fully, efficiently and comfortably.
The improvement of physical functioning is not necessarily seen as an end in
itself, as such improvement is based on developing a greater functional
awareness, which is often a gateway to more generalised enhancement of physical
functioning in the context of your environment and life.
Feldenkrais is accessible to all, whether young or old, physically challenged or
physically fit, all of whom can benefit from its lessons. It is especially
beneficial for anyone who experiences chronic or acute pain of the back, neck,
shoulder, hip, legs or knee, as well as for healthy individuals. It has been
seen to be very helpful in dealing with central nervous system conditions such
as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and stroke.
Through lessons in Feldenkrais, you can enjoy greater ease and enjoyment of
movement, an increased sense of vitality, and feelings of peaceful relaxation.
After a session you often feel taller and lighter, breathe more freely and find
that your discomforts have eased.
