What is Bowen Technique?
A relatively new therapy to the UK, Bowen Technique is becoming ever more
popular with patients who attend holistic and complementary health centres. Tom
Bowen developed the Bowen Technique in Geelong, near Melbourne in Australia, and
Ossie and Elaine Rentsch now teach it worldwide.
The Bowen Technique is gentle and non-invasive. It is made up of a series of
light manipulative rolling moves at very precise points, located on muscles,
tendons, ligaments and neurotransmitters. These manipulations have an effect
that stimulates the autonomic nervous system to help the body to heal itself.
Most people who have received Bowen describe the technique is very relaxing.
These manipulations release tension in the musculature, in turn creating an
integrated body response by improving circulation, lymphatic drainage, venous
drainage, and assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins. Many health
and structural problems can be resolved or greatly improved within 3-4
treatments although chronic disorders may take longer.
Mr Tom Bowen first developed the technique after the Second World War. Through
the years he refined his technique, increasing the effectiveness of the method
and having great success with many different conditions, requiring only a few
treatments to achieve good results.
In 1974 the Australian Government commissioned a census of all complementary
medicine practitioners. The information collated on Tom Bowen showed that he had
treated over 13,000 people per year.
Ossie Rentsch, an Osteopath and Naturopath, trained with Tom Bowen during this
time, documenting and charting his work. Tom Bowen had stipulated that Ossie and
Elaine Rentsch could not teach the technique until after his death. There are
now 56 instructors and around 10,000 practitioners worldwide and at present
there are a number of research programmes being carried out for a variety of
different conditions.
The Bowen Association UK, who operate under the trade name ‘Bowtech’, run
courses throughout Britain, Ireland and Europe, and many mainstream healthcare
professionals are training or are already qualified in the technique.
