What is the Alexander Technique?
The Alexander Technique was developed, more than a century ago by F.M. Alexander
(1869-1955), an Australian actor who had lost his voice. It was his observation
of the misuse of the body as an underlying cause of maladaptive functioning. From
these observations, he created an approach to solving his own physical problem by
focusing on correcting the misuse of the interrelationship and neuromuscular activity
of the head, neck and spine through postural alignment.
The Alexander Technique is a method where the body learns to change postural and
movement dysfunction, improving the patient's effectiveness in all areas of
life. Through this learning, the body learns to eliminate poor posture and misuse
of the body’s structure. In a series of one-on-one lessons with an Alexander teacher,
a student of the technique develops the skills to execute any action with minimized
strain and maximized balance, resulting in more mobility, less muscular tension,
and decreased pain.
Alexander Technique has been found to significantly: -
- Reduce pain
- Improve overall functional strength and mobility
- Enhance breathing coordination
- Modify stress responses
The Technique is known to be beneficial for treating a wide variety of
neurological and musculoskeletal problems. It provides a framework allowing the
teacher to observe and improve human movement thereby providing the client with
the method to gain proficiency in basic movement skills. It also tackles poor
posture by changing bad habits of muscular response, doing this by providing a
unique approach to neuromuscular re-education. The result is less muscular
tension in the neck, back and shoulders giving a more upright posture.
The Alexander Technique empowers you to enhance the body’s own healing system,
where, without the use of drugs with any associated side effects surgery, helps
you find long-term relief. As you activate this process, it is within your power
to perpetuate its beneficial effects.
